More Global problems: Surging Tensions In The Middle East
A full-blown war between Israel and Hezbollah would be devastating for all concerned
Welcome back to The Woz Report. In this edition, we’ll discuss escalating tensions in the Middle East. I’ll reflect on my experiences in hostile environments to explain why the West may struggle to intervene in a broader conflict, and why the situation might benefit Moscow.
The deteriorating situation
A Middle East peace roadmap looks a million miles away despite political pressure and global protests. On Monday, US envoy Amos Hochstein arrived in Israel to hold talks with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, President Isaac Herzog and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant.
The situation on Lebanon’s frontier with northern Israel is tense, with regular exchanges of fire. Thousands of Iranian-backed fighters are reportedly ready to support Hezbollah, and the Israeli Air Force has intensified operations targeting Hezbollah sites in Lebanon. Meanwhile, Houthi-backed rebels continue to target commercial shipping, with the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower ordered home after an extended tour.
