Mastering Organisation: Managing Multiple Publications with Ease
Establish a Routine with Diary Entries
Welcome back to the Sunday edition of The Woz Report!
Today, we’re going behind the scenes, because some of you have been asking, “How do you find so much time to write?” Today, I’m excited to share my secret sauce. Actually, it’s a bit of common sense. I'll explain my simple, yet effective steps to how I stay organised and productive across multiple publications. Plus, stick around until the end for some exciting news!
Establish a Routine with Diary Entries
Every morning I dedicate 10-15 minutes to planning topics. This is generally done during my commute, while everyone around me doom scrolls on social media. Getting my thoughts down on paper is really important, especially if my schedule is busy.
Here’s a peek into my typical morning diary entry:
The Woz Report:
Research on why governments are losing the war on drugs (spoiler alert).
Tell my audience how I manage my time (this edition).
ESG Nerd:
Draft article on renewable energy.
Explain the challenges of dealing with e-waste.
I’ll refer to my mini diary to review my ideas or thoughts, ensuring nothing slips through the cracks. I’m lucky enough to commute for an hour by train, giving me 10 hours per week I would ordinarily spend behind the wheel of a car.
Utilising my iPad for Efficiency
My iPad is always within arm's reach. It's my go-to tool for capturing ideas, notes, and research findings. Here’s how I use it:
Note-Taking: Apps like Notability and GoodNotes keep my thoughts organised. GoodNotes might well be my favourite app.
There’s a diary function with GoodNotes, and I make a few bullet points against each day. It’s something that I’ve never liked doing, but now it’s become second nature.
I hate wasting time, and another benefit of my commute means that I can draft my posts. It’s another great time-saving hack.
Research and Inspiration
Digital Clippings are a brilliant way to capture research. I keep things simple with a little trick I’ve learned. I simply open up a new post and paste the research link directly into my Substack page, saving it as a draft. I’ve never been a fan of voice memos, but they can be useful when you’re on the go. The entire process is really about laying the foundations for the final article. Sometimes unexpected events occur beyond our control, like a breaking story that takes priority.
One tip I learned during my Master’s Degree was to quickly establish whether an article or research paper was going to add value to my writing. It’s a tip that has served me well.
Conclusion
There you have it! I absolutely love what I do, and with a bit of motivation, some handy hacks, and the smart use of technology, I manage to keep all the plates spinning. Of course, you have to be inquisitive, and writing on various topics not only keeps things exciting but it also broadens my knowledge. You might have noticed that I send you The Woz Report on Tuesdays, Fridays, and Sundays—keeping you updated and informed throughout the week.
Exciting News!
Before we wrap up, I have some exciting news to share! I’m writing a book on self-mastery. Here’s a sneak peek of what’s to come!
Life is one big mission. Getting from A to B should be straightforward, but it can be difficult because we lose our bearings, and that can spell trouble. Job loss, relationship breakups, poor health, addiction and grievance are all reasons for losing our way. For the purpose of this book, I’ll refer to losing your way as being deflected.
According to the Collins Dictionary, self-mastery is the ability to take control of one's life without being blown off course by feelings, urges, and circumstances etc.
View self-mastery as a fence. Each section, courage, sleep, nutrition etc are the pickets of your fence. The stronger your fence is, the more chances you have to control your emotions, keeping out the wolves and protecting your flock.
Thank you for joining me in this behind-the-scenes look at how I manage my writing schedule. I hope these tips help you stay organised and productive. As always, feel free to reach out with any questions or suggestions.
