Why did Rishi Sunak call a 4th of July general election when his party are trailing Labour by over 21 percent? One reason Mr Sunak called the election is that the Tories have urged the Prime Minister to call an election early and effectively throw in the towel. That’s a view shared by former Tory MP Alistair Stewart on The Rest is Politics podcast.
It will be intriguing to observe the level of effort Conservative MPs invest in the 2024 election campaign, especially if some ministers are contemplating a new career. As for Mr Sunak, he says he will continue as MP if he’s defeated at the ballot box, that’s according to Sky News.
Mr Sunak must realise that the writing is on the wall for his government, and he should start to think about packing up his belongings for the move out of Number 10. According to the Guardian, Michael Gove has announced he will not stand at the general election, bringing the number of Conservative MPs quitting the Commons instead of standing to 77, beating the previous record of 72 from 1997.
Tony Blair's lead in 1997 was 13% which resulted in a massive Labour landslide with a majority of 179. Labour's current lead of 21% should produce a majority bigger than Blair's.
Nigel Farage will not run in this year’s election, but one man who will is Jeremy Corbyn. The former Labour leader has confirmed he will run as an independent in his London constituency of Islington North.
