📢It’s ok to ask for help!
Five people committed suicide yesterday, and another five will commit suicide tomorrow. That’s what the UK mental health statistics tell us. How many of you have experienced a mental health problem?
Tomorrow, I’ll be sharing my mental health story, this time to a group of senior construction directors. My key message will be that it’s ok to ask for help.
Why do I share my story? Despite ongoing efforts, mental health still carries a stigma that prevents many from seeking help. As a motivational speaker, my mission is to challenge and dismantle these stigmas.
In my experience, mental health is a topic that many are hesitant to discuss. Line managers don’t always have the tools to handle mental health situations effectively. Does that resonate with you? I will share my knowledge on how to navigate these challenging situations.
I didn’t ask for help, but now I have the confidence to do so
11 years ago, I didn’t know how to ask for help, but I was lucky. A friend noticed that I wasn’t being myself, and he asked me to seek help. So began a prolonged struggle in a 9-month battle to recover from moderate to severe depression and general anxiety disorder. After my recovery, I came out stronger, but many aren’t so lucky.
Since then, I've shared my story, resonating deeply with audiences. Some have even thanked me, finding the courage to seek help after hearing about my journey. I’m confident of enrolling tomorrow’s audience, encouraging them to help break the stigmas in the workplace. I’ll be asking them to make a commitment to supporting their colleagues, friends and family.
It’s ok to ask for help.
Would you like me to talk to your organisation?
By sharing my story, I hope to amplify the message, and hopefully prevent another statistic, because way too many people are committing suicide. If we can’t find 15 minutes to talk about mental health today, we must be prepared to deal with the fallout. Remember, it’s ok to ask for help, because mental health is indiscriminate.
If you want to learn more about my motvational talk, you know what to do.
Thanks for writing this and for actively working towards a better world! 😊 We really need more open conversation about mental health. We need more community in general.
Such an important topic. I also speak openly about my experiences and I do that to break the stigma and so others know they’re not alone.
